Still Painting

I am excitedly wrapping up the painting in the new bedroom today. I had a genius idea to put stripes on the wall so I get to paint them. LOL

Raspberry Fizz and Purple Passion. Sounds like two yummy drinks but no, they are the colors going on the wall in Cassie's room. The Raspberry Fizz is up and looks great. Now I have to get the purple stripes up.

Once I am done I will post more. For now every spare second is going to painting and more painting!

Setback

As usual the project didn't go quite as planned. By 7 p.m. last night we were painting the room when we ran out of paint. Just a few square feet of wall left unpainted. So disappointing. But, Billy is buying paint after work today so when he is home the painting will resume. Then I will post pictures.

I got some news this weekend that rocked my world, literally. Everything I ever took for granted seems so precious now. I can't share this news as I have been asked to keep it to myself. I only tell you this because now I am struggling. What seemed so important to me on Friday now seems so petty. I have been thinking back at my behaviors and realizing I was in the wrong. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. It is so easy to say that when life is good, or you think it is. Now I truly feel every moment with my family is so precious. Hug your kids and spouse today. Things can change in a nanosecond.

Fluff and Stuff

Meet another of our kittens: This is Mouse. Or as we more commonly call her, Momma Kitty.

Billy found her out in our yard when she was just a baby. She had wandered in from someone's farm we think and was camping out on the tire of a car. Billy brought her in to show her to us and then after we all oooohed and aaaaahed over her he said he was taking her back outside. You can imagine how well that went over. So she stayed and became a member of our family.

Shortly after she turned 6 months old she went into heat and mewed her little head off. The kids, not finding it amusing shooed her out the door. Several months later she gave birth to one kitten. She had a really rough time in labor and so we made an appointment to get her fixed as soon as the baby kitten stopped nursing. Only she got out of the house one day while she was still nursing the kitten and got pregnant again. This time she had 6 kittens. We gave all but one away when they were old enough and she had the surgery she needed the first time around. Now she is quite a lazy and loving kitty. She has what we refer to as "elevator butt" because everytime you pet her no matter what position she is in her butt ends up in the air so you can better pet her.

CRM Software

For many years now my hubby has thrown around the idea of becoming a freelance worker. Or better yet, starting his own company.

Last month he started researching software, websites, and servers to see what was available for his business. What he discovered was very low quality services for very high prices. He was disappointed. I told him to keep looking as there has to be something better out there.

And we may have found it. This crm software looks like it may fit the bill. It has great customer service and you can get a free 14 day trial. They allow you to focus more on making sales because they basically run the software for you. They even will install it on your current webpage for you. That is service.

New Design

I was so in love with my old design that it took me awhile to find one I liked even better.

PPP Experience

It is my dream to find a job that pays well and yet allows me to be home when my kids are home. I know, this is everyone's dream job isn't it? And it seems as though it doesn't exist. So I am doing the next best thing. I signed up for PayPerPost. It does exactly what it sounds like. You pick a topic from their list of advertisers and post a blog entry about it. And they pay you for it.

I have only been a member of PPP for a few weeks now and have done a few posts. At first I was incredibly frustrated because I couldn't seem to get my posts right. They each have set criteria and you have to do it EXACTLY as it is written or your post gets rejected. You see, PPP does blog reviews on each post. Thankfully PPP gives you the opportunity to fix it and resubmit the post. Now that I have figured out the system somewhat I am getting better at it.

Since I haven't received my first payment yet I can't say much about how much I am loving the money but I can say I am ecstatic about the IDEA of the money. Maybe it will be enough to let me stay home and be the Mom I want to be to my kids but take some of the burden off of my husband.

Making a Mess

Home remodeling is a mess. There is no way around it. We started this room makeover by taking out the plaster and lath walls. That created a ton of dust. Dust that permeated my house. It is in every crack, crevice, and hole.

But once the dust settled and the plaster and lath was removed, we began the process of rebuilding. We put in the drywall and finished the walls. Once primed and painted, we had a bedroom.

One down and three to go.

Two down and two to go.

We hope to be done by the time our kids are moving out...... *sigh*

PPP

In the past I have signed up for several other "money making" programs, most of them advertising, and have been sadly disappointed in the amount of money I made. I think my Adsense account is up to 4 bucks after having it on my blog for well over two years. I don't know how Dooce does it. She says she can live off her advertising. Clearly it isn't going to even buy me dinner.

So when I saw Merritt doing all these payperpost's I was optimistic. Then when she said she paid her truck payment with it, I knew I had to give it a go. So I went ahead and put it on my blogs.

One thing I have learned is that many of PPP's competitors promise big money and then fail to give the details. At least in the large print. PPP Direct is new and according to their website PPP Direct cuts out the massive overhead. This allows them to pass more money on to the people who are doing the legwork, ME! And did you know some of those companies promise you big money but in the end some take over half your earnings in fees? That would be a major bummer. PPP Direct only charges a 10% fee, 5% of which goes to transaction fees for PayPal and credit card processing. Not a bad return. This is a great new way for bloggers to keep the most amount of money possible while have the safety and security of an escrow-like service that will assure we get paid for our hard work.

I am still swaying back and forth on this PPP deal but for now I will continue to give it a go. Let me know what you think of PPP on my blog in particular. Go ahead, tell me.

New Glasses

Becca and Megan went in for their annual eye checkup on Tuesday.

Both of them had a significant change in vision. For the worse. They both needed new glasses. I wasn't that surprised since both of them had reverted to squinting to see things far away even when they had their glasses on.

I think they each tried on 20 or 30 different frames before selecting the ones that look the best on them. Megan is so fair skinned that was hard to find a pair that didn't overwhelm her face. I wanted people to see her first, not her glasses.

Becca picked a pair that were a great color for her skin and they look so nice.

We were told they would be in in about 7 days. I got a call two days later saying the glasses were ready. Say what you will about Walmart but that is fast and great service. I have nothing negative to say about their optical shop. And the kids glasses are warrantied for a year! If they break them Walmart will replace them for free. Not bad.

Black Diamonds

Way back when, when Billy and I went to buy our wedding rings we looked at the usual "sets" and I was totally unimpressed. For one thing, I didn't want a set of wedding rings that everyone else had and for two, I don't like diamonds. There I said it. They are plain white (clear) rocks. What is pretty about that? I have always preferred the colored stones. That would explain why my wedding ring has a pink rock right?

Well my dislike for diamonds may have changed. I found a site on the web that sells Black Diamonds! That is right. They make Black Diamond Jewelry. They sell a wide variety of jewlery including

Weekend Coming

Today I had no extra kids! Yea! It is nice to have them here but so nice for them all to go home and let us be ourselves again.

Today we spent the entire morning cleaning the house. The kids did the bathrooms and their rooms. I am still working on laundry but that is a never-ending job. I am also self-cleaning the oven and phew it smells in here. I hope it is done soon.

I have been busy in my gardens lately. I am trying to get all my flowers and plants to grow big and strong. Thankfully I shop at springhillnursery.com. They replace any plant for any reason, no questions asked. I have managed to kill at least 6 so far this spring. They just didn't make it through the winter. I emailed them and they are shipping out the new ones. They are a great company if you are looking for plants. Especially if your green thumb is a little brown like mine.

We plan to spend this long weeked getting the 2nd of the four bedrooms completed. We had intended to do it last weekend but things come up and plans change. I told Billy THIS is the weekend. I am ready to get the girls out of my office so I can have it back. :)

Help Yourself

Now that we are in the throes of summer I have several neighbor kids stopping by all day. Several in particular seem to have no manners. Or perhaps it is me. I am not sure which. So help me out here.

My mom always sent our friend's home if we were going to eat. I feel the same way. My husband on the other hand is all, "Let 'em eat whatever they want". I am going to be struggling to feed my own 5 kids all summer. I don't think I need to be stuffing 5 extra mouths.

If a neighbor kid comes over to play with your kids do you find it rude for them to go into your fridge/pantry and get themselves something to eat? What if they ask for something to eat even if no one else is eating anything? How do you handle it if you are giving your kids a meal and friends are over?

Busy Busy Week

I probably won't be around much to post this week. The kids are out of school and I have five extra kids coming. That makes 10 kids in my house today. Oy!

Wednesday and Thursday I will have three extra and Friday it will just be two.

Favorite Foods

List your top five favorite locations to eat, locally. Since I live in a very very small town I will list the 5 places I frequent in the closest town. Otherwise you would only hear all about the small town cafe/bar thing in our town that I have never eaten at. LOL

1. SDSU Dairy Bar.
This is on South Dakota State University's campus. The students produce ice cream, cheese, and many other milk-based products. Of course we go for the ice cream. Last time we went I had strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Yum!

2. George's Pizza
This is located in Downtown Brookings. They serve a wide variety of foods including Burgers, Greek, Pasta, Pitas, Pizza, Sandwiches.

3. Nick's Hamburgers
Also located in Downtown Brookings. It is an old-fashioned hamburger shop. You can get burgers by the bag. This is one of our favorite stops on the 4th of July.

4. Mad Jack's
When Billy and I were in college at SDSU in 1993 this sandwich shop started out in a small rundown building just west of campus. They were wildly popular within months with the college students. They have great food (indian tacos! Yum!). They also have a wide variety of ice cream, hot and cold subs, salads, wraps, grilled and fried items, soups, and Mexican entrees. They have since moved into a new and more modern building on Main Street in Brookings. It is fun to watch them grow.

5. Taco John's
I know this one is a chain. Although I don't think they are nation-wide. The Taco John's in Brookings however was rated #1. And believe me they taste #1. All their tortillas are made at the restaurant each morning. No premade stuff here. And each order is made fresh. Nothing sits under heat lamps for 30 minutes waiting for the lunch rush. And man do they ever have a lunch rush. Try to go when it is not a meal time or you will be in a long line.
They have the best taco's and burrito's of anyplace I have eaten. My favorite to order is the meat and potato burrito. It has potato ole's, beef, nacho cheese, sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes. Yummy.

Vacation

We are planning a huge family vacation to Disneyland in 2010. We want our kids to be old enough to enjoy it and remember it.

But that hasn't stopped me from researching and checking out prices now. The other day I surfed through all the usual hotel/motel websites looking to see what kind of prices we are to expect.

Here is a new site, hotelreservations.com, that gives prices on Cheap Hotels.



So lets take a look shall we:
First you enter the destination and date of check-in and check-out. Then you tell them how many adults and how many rooms you want. (Interesting side note: If you have more than four kids you cannot find a quote for ANYTHING online. Every single website sends me to a page that says "please call". LOL )

Then you enter the kids ages. So far this is all pretty much the same as the other sites I have been on.

Then it shows you your results. For Orlando I got several hotels ranging in price from 84.00 to 369.00. From all the other sites I have been on I can tell you these are very competitive prices. And some of the hotels have a internet special so they are even lower priced. You can click on any of the pictures of the hotels and it then gives you many more pictures and information on the hotel such as ammenities, breakfast, close tourist attractions, etc. The great part is you can see what you are getting before you get there.

I even did a search for my hometown where we go visit at least once a year. I found a hotel room for 69 bucks a night. That beats staying with relatives anyday.

And don't just think local. This site has hotels all over the world in their listings. I did a quick search for London. (I can dream) I found several hotels for extremely low rates. Who would have thought you could go to London for less than 100 bucks a night.

This site is not just for hotels either. It has tabs at the top of the page for airlines, vacation packages, rental cars, and more. You can get it all done at one website. Awesome!

Up Early

Yes it is 8:30 on a Saturday morning and I have been up for at least an hour already. The curse of getting up early everyday. I can't sleep in.

Add to that, the fact that we are going to complete the second bedroom in our remodel process this weekend and I am excited. We have the paint waiting. Cassie picked out Purple Passion and Raspberry Fizz. They are as neon as Mr. Bill's yellow room. At least I know my kids aren't afraid of color.

When or if we ever sell this house I will have lots of re-painting to do. LOL

What would I do with a million dollars? Oh, so many things. I would love to go on a shopping spree. Clothes, shoes, housewares. But most of all I would hire someone to come in and finish the remodeling we started so we could have our weekends and nights back! :)

OMG!

How did Friday get here so fast. Wasn't it just Wednesday?!

Well, I am sorry for neglecting you all for so long. This is was the last week of school. My kids will be walking in the door with the entire contents of their desks in plastic shopping bags in a few short hours.

Those contents will get dumped on the floor and table and every other surface in the house. And then they will turn on the t.v. and not move for the next 3 months.

Or so they think. Last summer I turned off the dish. There was no t.v. I am not going to do that this summer but I am going to drastically limit the amount of time they get to watch. I haven't decided how many hours a day yet. But I will.

I want my kids to go outside and play, jump on the trampoline, ride their bikes, swim in the pool, etc.

The Mommy Award

Today was awards day at the kids school. They have a wide variety of awards the kids could/can earn throughout the school year.

Marea got one. Yes, one. She is not very ambitious.

Cassie got four. Not too bad.

Megan got three.

And Becca got a gazillion. Her packet was overflowing she had so many. That girl has ambition.

But this left Megan feeling very upset. She only had three awards. When Megan is upset she doesn't share this information with anyone. She just becomes unbearably grouchy and unpleasant to be around. I have been trying really hard to tune into her more hoping that it will help her with all of her issues.

So when she was alone, I walked up to her and told her how proud I was of her. They get one award for AR points (accelerated reading). Megan received this award after working very very hard all year to read the correct number of books. Reading for her is not enjoyable. I don't know why but it is not something she enjoys. But she sucked it up and read anyway. I told her that she did great working so hard. And I had one award I wanted to add to her three. I gave her the mommy award. It is to recognized how much I love her and how proud I am of all the effort she puts forth even when she doesn't want to. It comes with a trip to Tun-0-Fun (think small town chuck-e-cheese).

She sort of shrugged me off when I was talking to her but only a few minutes later she came up to me and and gave me a hug and said she was excited to go to Tun-o-Fun.

I wish I could protect her forever.

Exit Stage um...... Where'd the door go?

We spent the first half of the weekend removing a door in our house.

When we bought our house this door was used as the main entry. It is not the front door though. The other problem was it walked right into the kitchen. This is always the messiest room in my house and I wasn't too thrilled to have people walking right into it.

So we started parking in the front and using the front door. I put one of those cheesy signs on the side door that said "Please use the front door."

A couple of weeks back we ripped off the stairs to this door. Then we went to Menards to get a new box of siding so we could take out the door and cover it up. We found out our siding is now a special order item so we had to wait 2-3 weeks for it to arrive. We picked the box up on Friday.

There is a "real" back door just around the corner from where the old one was. I am so glad to have it gone. And the biggest bonus? I gained an entirely new flower bed where the stairs once were. I put 16 carnation plants in and several other flowers that I cannot remember the name of. Soon this will be a very colorful side of my house.

I am so excited about this new site! Through PPP I have found out about a website that collects coupons for both online and brick and mortar stores. I frequently use coupons when shopping and almost always try to find a code for an online purchase. I spend a good portion of our income at Target. I love the clothes especially for the girls. Right now you can use a coupon code for free shipping on Women's clothes or $5 off your $50 order at Target. Target coupons can be found here.

There are literally hundreds of stores and websites listed on the Coupon Chief site. Go and check it out. And don't purchase anything online until you check this site for codes!

Bug Movie

I am not a movie person. I think most of you know that by know.

But I must admit scary movies excite me. I love watching the previews and am always interested. I think part of it is because I can rarely guess the ending five minutes into the movie. But then when I actually sit down to watch one, I spend 90% of the movie with my hands over my eyes.

There is a new movie coming out called Bug.

Nice posters huh? I like both but I think the one with Ashley Judd's face (the bottome one) is more appealing to me. I like that is has a face within a face. The bug poster is cool too but not as interesting to me. My husband however would love the sfx of the top one. :)

Bug movie=eeeeeeeek. But it is not like the swarming bug movies. You know those ones you watched late at night where the killer cockroaches invaded building and cars and killed and devoured all the people? Yea, it is not one of those.

Ashley Judd is in this movie. I love Ashley Judd. I have watched her since waaaaaaaaay back when. And read the poster, It says it is "One of the most DISTURBING horror movies imaginable" This bug movie has definitely peaked my interest. You can watch the trailer here.

While I doubt I will go to the theater to see it, I may sit in the comfort of my husband's arms and peek through my fingers while he rents it at home.

Just call me chicken.

Confusion

Yesterday while we were getting ready to go to the zoo for Mr. Bill's preschool field trip (another post on that soon) he was in the bathroom with me. I was doing my hair and he was going potty.

After he was done he wiped, got up, pulled up his pants, and left the bathroom.

After weeks of me hammering into the kids that they need to FLUSH after they use the toilet, I got mad. I yelled out to Mr. Bill to get back in the bathroom, "You need to floss after you go to the bathroom!"

He looks at me rather confused. "But Mom!" he begins.

"Don't but Mom me! Do what I tell you to do!" I say, interrupting him.

He shuts the toilet and I fully expect him to reach over and push down the lever. Instead he climbs up on the toilet and reaches for the floss on the shelf above.

"What are you doing?" I ask him.

"Flossing!" he yells back.

Now I am the one looking confused.

Billy (who has been in the bedroom this whole time) comes around the corner chuckling. "You told him to floss after he goes to the bathroom. And he is listening to you just like you said."

Mommy-brain in action folks. I don't think I will ever be able to speak normally again.

Non-Profit Drug Rehab

You have all heard, no doubt, about Britney Spear's recent visit to a rehab center. And if you are reading the articles you have seen the price tag for her little stint that she now says was a waste of her time.

I am sure the price tag ended with several zeros.

For the rest of us who have family, friends, or ourselves have a problem with drugs there is a new service: 1800nodrugs.

It is a helpline for people to find treatment for themselves or a loved one. And will help you find one you can afford. Since we don't all have overflowing bank accounts.

Drugs can be so debilitating, especially with these new found "manufactured" ones like Meth. Our years as a foster parent taught us that these drugs can and do have a profound effect on these little babies and children. Drug rehab is one step in the process of healing these families.

Countdown

I have been a little stressed and worried about Megan lately. She is an incredibly picky eater. As in she eats hardly anything. And for the last six months or so she has been commenting about how people are fat or not fat. The other day she came home from school and I was sitting on the couch next to her. I was wearing shorts. She was poking her tummy and saying "fat, fat, fat" and then she started poking my leg and saying "fat, fat, fat". I told her she was not fat (she is in the 5% for her weight according to the doctor.) At age 9, she is technically UNDERWEIGHT.

So last night she ate three noodles and a piece of bread with butter and a glass of milk for dinner. After dinner I told her she needs to be sure she is eating enough to grow big and strong. She says, "I don't like to eat." And then rather casually a few minutes after dinner she tells me her pants are getting too big because her stomach is shrinking.

Billy thinks I am reading too much into this. I don't. I am not entirely sure she knows what she is doing. I think and hope it is just her stubborn nature.

I don't say anything to Megan about her weight or her eating because I know it will only encourage her. She is stubborn and likes to be in control of her life so anytime I try to interfere it only backfires. I just hope whatever her motives are are not what I am thinking they are. Only time will tell.

Life in Bullet Points

Happy May Day to all of my friends and family! I always look forward to this day, simply because it means SUMMER IS COMING!

*The kids have 3 weeks left of school. Most of it will be eaten up by field trips, bike rodeo's, field day, and other un-school activities.

*My teeth are stillllllll killing me. I went and had my bite adjusted last week and that seems to have helped some. The pain is at least bearable now. He said it could take two weeks to three months for my nerves to settle down. I am usually okay now as long as I eat nothing that is hot or cold. Motrin is still my friend.

*We got the paperwork on the new mortgage so we could add on the garage. I freaked. We aren't getting the amount of money we thought and the payment is 200 higher than we were told it would be. Now we are thinking it over. My goal is to get us out of debt not add to it. This will definitely add to it.

*Two of my kitties seem to have developed a cold. They sneeze a lot but have no runny nose or any other symptom. I am letting them wait it out a few days before I call the vet.

*Had Mr. Bill's last conference of the year yesterday. He will be going on to kindergarten. Not that I expected anything else but it is always nice to hear it from the teacher. She said he is more than ready skill-wise. He will be a young one since his birthday is in June.

*Which reminds me! I have to make an appointment for him to go and get his kindergarten shots. I am not looking forward to this at all. I really do think getting shots when your kids are babies is so much easier because they don't know what is coming and they can't physically fight you. I almost had to sit on Becca to get hers done. And none of the other kids were much fun either. I will be glad when his are over that is for sure.
